Why is it that many people assume stay at home moms?
Isabel I asked:
stay home all day? there are so many activities and options available for sahm that I have a hard time seeing how people can think that we stay home all day. Why do so many people think that?
Midnight – You must have a strange group of friends, most of my friends “stay home” and we are always on the go.
Thank you for all the answers.

Most people seem to think SAHM’s are lazy and we stay home so we can sit on our butts all day watching soaps – with that attitude it’s not surprising they think we’re all shut-ins.

Because they have not had the experience to stay at home.
Staying at home I believe keeps you busier than if you went to work.
But at the same time, working moms go to work and come home to still do yet more work. Either way being mom is not an easy job.
I’ve done both and know from experience.

I have wondered that myself. Also, why do people assume that because a mom stays at home, she has all sorts of time to help them? Pick up dry-cleaning, etc. Astonishes me. I am rarely ‘home’ with my kids, I like to do things with them. It is only when someone is sick we are home for a long period fo time.

I know what you mean.I run down the road once or twice everyday.Whether it be to pay bills, run to the store,or take my child to the park. There is always somewhere I need to go.

I suppose it’s out of sheer ignorance. I don’t even remember the last day I had to just stay home. I volunteer as a classroom aid at my son’s preschool three days per week. I suppose that would make me a “working mom,” except for the fact that I do it because I love children and care about my child’s education instead of just for a paycheck. I do virtually all of the housework, errands, and basically keep the house running. And you’re right – either Midnight has a really odd group of friends, or she’s exaggerating. I know quite a few SAHP’s, and not a single one of us lounges around like she described.

when I was a sahm I watched my son & a girl that is the same age as him, granted I did not go out ( I don’t like drving w/ others children when
they were that yong) but I had no time to myself since it was like having twins & I can’t stand to watch the soaps .

Its annoying isn’t it? Monday alone…
up by 5am to send hubby off to work, then get all the kids ready and out the door for school by 7am. I had to pack the tots into the car and drive ten miles into town (we live on a military base) to pay two bills and do the food shopping. I had to be back home before 10am. Got home and walked the dog, then off to a lunch meeting for the spouse group. Get work done on the van after the lunch meeting and be home by 2pm for kids to get home from school. Little ones went down for a nap at 2pm which gave me time to do some wash and clean up a little. Off to drop some stuff at the post office, then my oldest had soccer practice. After soccer practice two of my children had soccer pictures that day! We had to pack up and run to the meeting place to get pictures done on time and be home in time to start dinner. Got dinner done as early as I could cause one child had a girl scout meeting.
At 10pm I get this call from a working friend who has one child. She says “I tried calling you all day today? Where have you been? Its not like you have a job… you’re a stay at home mom! How come you are never home?!”
Its the most annoying thing for me ever! My kids have activities. Girl scouts, soccer, football (thankfully that is over for now!), after school science clubs, plus everything I have to get done for my home business and for my family. Not to mention the mass amounts of doctor’s appointments…. oh and I’m 20 weeks pregnant LOL.
Its never easy. Sometimes I wish they could understand.
