In my state (North Carolina) according to the fire marshall at eight years old a child can stay home by themselves.
Though I wouldn’t leave my 8 year old alone by herself for more than a few minutes (say if I had something to deliver to a neighbor down the street).

I would call your local Department of Social Services and get the minimum age. And really looking at your child’s maturity and ability to care for themself, follow directions, and things such as do they scare easily? how safe is the neighborhood? etc etc.

Oh and I started babysitting at 12.

I have been staying home alone since I was twelve, and am 13 now. I think it’s perfectly safe to be alone. I think if a child is responsible (won’t blow up the microwave) then it’s ok to leave them at home. If you don’t know what “responsible” is…then ask yourself, what kind of things would they want to do when you are not there?

Legally older than 12 in Illinois.

There’s not really an age limit but I would say 11 or 12. It depends on responsibility and maturity level really. You have to know that they wont throw a wild party while your gone.

i think the law may say twelve, but it is truly up to the parent. my mom left me at home alone for short periods of time when i was like 11, but she would always call every 15 minutes (i wasn’t allowed to pick up the phone, but she would begin to leave a message and when i knew it was her i would pick up) to make sure that i was okay, and following her answering the phone rule.

If you call your local department of social services they will tell you. In the state of Nevada there is no set age. It is a judgment call. If you feel your child can be trusted you cam leave them. They say usually around 10 and up depending on the maturity of the child.
