How old can a kid stay at home by themself and it not be against the law?

stay at home
Juliet asked:

I was just wondering what the age was that a kid could stay home by themself and not get in trouble with the law if someone reports it.

that depends on the state you live in.
in fl. you can leave them home when they are 10 if you think they are responsible enough to call 911 in case of an emergency, i would check with a lawyer or with the police department to find out.

    good luck and god bless

I think it may vary by state, but I believe it’s 12-13. But I would also go by maturity level because I know many kids that are older that shouldn’t be left alone!

18 i beleive, a child is still under parental supervision and their responsibility until they are 18, seriously though my son is 9 he walks to the shop (end of my street) all by himself, when i walk up the shop sometimes hed rather stay at home hes in less danger inside his own home than he is out on the street, so it would depend on circumstances (i would never leave my son home alone for more than 30 mins and id never go further than the end of the street if he was on his own at home also i wouldnt leave the house if he was asleep) if you are thinking of reporting someone make surte the child is in doubt before you do and dont report someone because of a problem you have with them, because the child has to live with the consequences and im sure there isnt a child in this world who could rile an adult enough for them to take away his home and family and all that he knows

I’m not sure – maybe 13? But in this crazy world I would probably not leave a 13 year old home alone…

in california it is when “a parent finds the child responsible” and if you live in an apartment or multiple housing unit, the manager must be aware and agree. my son has been home alone in the afternoons since he was 10. he is now 12 and he can cook and clean.

In New Zealand its 14 years old.

You can’t legally babysit until you are 14 either.
