Do you think it’s rude for convenience store clerks to be one the phone while at the cash register?
bigbiff_70 asked:
I hardly saw it in the past, but with Bluetooth or just the plain cell phones, now more than ever, I see convenience/liquor store clerks on the phone will ringing up customers.

Have you people experienced this and do you believe it’s rude or part of the times?
I’m sorry, I am just in your store buying your product: Am I bothering you? Should I wait for you to finish your call before you buy anything?

When with a customer yes. Its not professional. Yes I have experienced it. Lately in fact.

I think it’s annoying. If I go to the store, I want to get in there, find my stuff, buy it and get out. If a clerk is on the phone, that’s just slowing down my whole day.

I get off the phone before checking out at the store…I certainly expect the clerk who is on the clock to do the same unless it’s a business call to the store which they must answer

yah, cashiers should talk to the customers, and someone else can deal with the phone

Yes, I find it extremely annoying. It’s bad enough when it’s another customer, but when it’s a personal call I get really steamed.

Lol. You are in a convience store, so to them, being on the phone is convienent. If we were talking about a big supermarket chain like Safeway or somethin of course, but 7/11 I see it all the time and it doesn’t bother me. It’s life.

It’s extremely rude… I worked in retail for several years in college, and there was one girl who was ALWAYS on her cell phone. I finally talked to my manager about it, and her chewed her out but good. XD

I used to have to answer the store phone while ringing up customers all the time at a job I worked at as a teenager. I would think it was rude if the cashier was talking on their personal cellphone.

I hate that! They could at least say hold on a minute and wait on you.
November 14th, 2009 at 3:46 am
Very Rude, they are definitely not following company policies, I can not imagine any employer that would find this acceptable!
November 16th, 2009 at 7:31 pm
Very rude and unprofessional.

it’s not the clerk’s store and they probably make min wage. why would they care if you think it rude?! why? because they would get fired and walk across the street and get the same piss poor job?
put into context what they do, how many people they see in a day and how long their days are. and you are fake offended because they are not kissing your bum? you don’t affect how much they get paid. they have to be there even when you are not.
this is not a professional job and they are not compensated like it is.
November 19th, 2009 at 8:39 am
Yes they are supposed to be paying attention to the customers.

Of course it is rude to be on the phone while serving customers. The clerk is there to work and to serve the public not to talk over the phone. She shouldn’t let the phone call distract her concentration on her work. I understand sometime a call may come in at anytime, if that is so, she should just answer and tell the caller that she is busy and she’ll call back later and end the call immediately. If the call is an urgent call, the cleark should at least apologise to her customes before proceeding to answer her call. At least the understanding customers will feel easier.

As someone who has WORKED as a convenience store cashier, I would have to say… it depends. Who are they on the phone with? If it’s a personal call, then yes, it’s rude. But clerks also have to deal with phone calls from company associates who often don’t care that there are customers in line. They may also have to call associates, themselves, if there’s a problem at the store.
Just remember, a cashier’s job is not ONLY to ring you up at the counter. Our job INCLUDES that, but it is not our sole responsibility, and sometimes customers have to wait while we’re getting away from OTHER responsibilities, or deal with it when a cashier is on the phone with a business associate or manager.

I HATE that! HATE it! I have said more than once, “no, it’s ok, i’ll wait, do not want to interrupt”. They usually get the point. It’s ok if the person is talking about their children’s medicine or telling the babysitter what time they get off work. But just to blah blah blah about boyfriend problems and stupid crap, yep RUDE!!! You ought to tell them what you and every other customer thinks, “that’s rude, i do not feel like you value me as a customer since your discussion with your friend is more important and I won’t shop here anymore if you don’t apologize to me and change your rude ways”. that will get them off the phone and probably shocked enough to not make that mistake again. Or do the old “can you please call or give me a way to get in touch with your supervisor” .Speak your mind! It’s your hard earned $ your’s spending there!

i do find it rude!
December 3rd, 2009 at 7:59 pm
It’s not only rude, but a security issue that the clerk is engaging in a phone conversation while working at a register with strangers coming in and out. We all know that talking on cell phones is a distraction, that’s why there are so many issues with people talking on cells and driving. The same principle applies to this situation. They may be going through the motions and dealing with the checkout properly out of habit, but if they are having a phone conversation, they are mentally distracted. They could easily be robbed while being distracted and not able to act fast enough. Besides that, it’s rude of them not to be acknowledging their customers, that alone is rude.

as long as they get my change right….
December 6th, 2009 at 1:39 am
Yes it is especially if they don’t even look at you or say a word
December 8th, 2009 at 3:45 pm
really man? have you ever worked a sh!tty little convienence store counter? Not only is it the worst pay, its also BORING AS HELL. As for security, the clerk doesnt have anything taken out for getting robbed on the job, nor do they get payed enough to care. They see more piss ants (like you) in a shift than you’ll ever see in your life. If you don’t like it, go somewhere else.

It’s rude and it’s unprofessional. You could take this to their manager. Get the cashier’s name, time and date she did it and email or write a letter to the manager.
December 14th, 2009 at 9:35 pm
You’re right, its annoying, but is it really worth it to say anything.
It won’t help, they’ll still be on the phone.
December 16th, 2009 at 4:19 pm
Yes! I hate that.
