Can you get a cellphone and cell phone plan without a credit card?

I’m trying to get a cellphone without using a credit card. I would like to either get Verizon or Cingular as my carrier. I would like to get a normal plan and not the prepaid or pay as you go plans. I would like to know if it is in any way possible to pay with cash/personal check for your phone and/or monthly bill. Thanks
